Stage 4 Non Small Cell Lung Cancer Discussions
Stage 4 non small cell lung cancer cannot be cured, but treatment can reduce pain, ease breathing, and extend and improve quality of life. The two major forms of lung cancer are known as small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer accounts for about 20% of all lung cancer cases and is usually caused by smoking. Non-small cell lung cancer is much more common than small cell lung cancer and represents about 80% of all lung cancer cases. The reason that small cell cancer is separated from non-small cell cancers is that small cell cancers behave differently and are treated differently than non-small cell cancers. Small cell cancer tends to be more aggressive and can spread quickly.
The most commonly recommended treatment for stage 4 non small cell lung cancer is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy can slow or stop the growth of tumors, which are often spread throughout the body. However, surgery might be an option if the cancer has spread to a single place outside the lung. The treatment of patients with non-small cell lung cancer depends to a great extent on the stage of the disease when it is discovered. The treatments, and the treatment options, can vary depending upon whether the cancer is early stage, locally advanced, or metastatic. The study found that Stage 4 non small cell lung cancer relatively preserved quality of life in NSCLC patients who were being treated with chemotherapy. Physicians may be overly optimistic about the positive effects of medical treatment on quality of life.
