5 Things Every Husband Should Do When His Wife is in Labor

Every husband wants to do his part when it comes time for the birth of his child. Being supportive to the wife and offering up any help that is needed can be the best role that a husband can fill.

Be there for her and support her. Your number one priority and focus throughout the labor process is your wife. It’s important that you take the role of being supportive to her and of just being there for her. You must work hard to keep her calm and do whatever she asks of you. Try hard to keep a level head and be supportive to her, no matter what she may encounter.

Stay energized and remember to eat as this will be important to stay alert. Though it’s easy to forget about this, you do need to eat. You may not want to do this right in front of your wife, but take whatever steps are necessary to stay energized. You will need as much energy as you can possibly get and therefore it’s your job to keep it going so that you can stay with your wife through night and day. This can be a long process, and she will need you!

Do whatever is possible to help your wife relax. Even if your wife is asking for something that seems abnormal to you, indulge her if it will keep her calm. Give her massages, bring her ice chips, play relaxing music, adjust her pillows—do whatever you can to keep her calm and focused. That’s a big part of what the husband can and should do throughout the labor process.

Keep family and close friends updated on the progress. Though you want to be sure that your regular updates don’t take you away from the focus on your wife, it is important to keep those closest to you updated. If they are there at the hospital, be sure that you peek your head out to let them know what is going on. If they are somewhere else, call them with updates whenever you can. This will put everyone’s mind at ease throughout the process.

Keep informed on what is going on with your wife and with the baby. It can really put your wife’s mind at ease if you are in tune to what is going on. Keep tuned in to the monitors, be sure that you ask the doctors questions, and keep up on any reports that they give. Know what is going on with your wife, with the labor process, and with the baby so that you can be informed and help your wife to be as she makes it through the stages of labor.

The labor and delivery process can be strenuous, but with a good support system it can be a bit less of a strain. As a husband, you need to put your wife first and offer whatever sort of support that you can during this time.
